John Brown's body still lies a'moldering in the grave at his farm near Lake Placid, N.Y., but the state recently announced plans to close the historic site because of budget constraints. Supporters of the site immediately swung into action-State Sen. Kevin Parker of Brooklyn introduced a resolution opposing the closure, and the town of North Elba indicated it might be willing to take over its operation, which costs the state $40,000 annually. Deep in the Adirondack Mountains, the farm was Brown's home as he planned his 1859 raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in what is now West Virginia.
