In the present article we explain how the computer algebra system SINGULAR has been used successfully to either solve a mathematical problem or to find the correct statement of a theorem which then could be proved without computer, or to construct interesting examples. The applications belong to algebraic geometry and singularity theory, the main area of applications, but also to group theory, general relativity, and one application outside mathematics.
