摘要

The time for reflections is getting closer to the H hour; therefore, the scientific community has to finally declare how the fourth generation (4G) will really look. Besides various visions, we have to look into the "4G crystal ball" and attempt to define it. In this article, we propose a top-down approach with a focal point that stands in a user-group-centric vision of the wireless world. In this way, we have been able to extract key features and technical requirements, which lead to a plausible characterization of 4G. Within this framework, we identify cooperation as the most promising enabling paradigm of the next wireless revolution. As a consequence, we have derived several matters to be considered when dealing with its establishment in future wireless networks. Finally, we present the main technical benefits of cooperative communications.
