This review paper will address the evolution and road maps of Fibre Channel protocols used in fiber-optic storage-area networks, with emphasis on the new technologies introduced to support 4 Gbps links. In particular, we will discuss multimode design issues, including bandwidth-distance product and tradeoffs in linear and limiting receiver design. Single-mode link issues include the triple tradeoff among laser transmitter center wavelength, spectral width, and data rate.
