In recent years, mobile location estimation in wireless local-area network (WLAN) environments has drawn considerable attention in the field of wireless communications. Numerous methods exist for position estimation, but all lack sufficient positioning accuracy. In this paper, we deal with the problem of estimating a mobile user's position in a WLAN using the received signal strength values from the access points. We approach the problem from a statistical point of view and propose a position estimation technique based on Fisher's discrimination analysis. Our technique consists of two phases-the training phase and localization phase. Our results show that we can estimate the position of a mobile user to an accuracy of two feet more than 79 percent of the time. Also, we compared the performance of our method with a common positioning algorithm, Bayesian algorithm, and Ekahau, a commercially available positioning software program.
