The undersea warfare arena has experienced a renaissance in the past few years, having been preceded by years of neglect when military funding was focused on airborne and land-based operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. This revitalization has been driven by China's increasing aggression in the South China Sea around the Spratly Islands, as well as aggressive rants coming out of North Korea. In response to these geopolitical situations, which could have global implications, undersea warfare systems inventories are being replenished and new technology is being developed.Over the years, several nations have been upgrading their submarine fleets by producing adaptable technologies, or simply buying them commercially off the shelf if they are readily available. Because these trends increase the threats to surface combatants, they have forced an effort to identify the most promising ASW technologies through a process of discovery, assessment, experimentation, and analysis.
