After 2,194 days (six years and one day), the war between the Allies and the Axis powers came to an end on the deck of the USS Missouri. More than 80 million people had lost their lives as the powers of France, China, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom worked to defeat Hitler's Germany, Hirohito's Japan, and Mussolini's Italy. On September 1,1939, Germany invaded Poland, beginning the occupation of Europe. One year later the Tripartite Pact united Germany, Italy, and Japan as the Axis powers. In December 1941, when Japan attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, the world was engulfed in war. From Europe to the Pacific, the global powers waged war until, after suffering staggering losses in his attempt to invade the Soviet Union and the Allies had breached the beaches of Normandy in June 1944, Hitler committed suicide in April 1945 and Germany surrendered; V-E Day is celebrated as Victory in Europe on May 8,1945.
