Many of us who aren't familiar with California's flying weather can be fooled into thinking the entire state fits a Hollywood-style profileall sun and scenic vistas. But California in the winter months can experience deep, moist, onshore flows that can produce some of the nation's worst icing conditions. Often, successions of low pressure systems from the Pacific track east toward California in a process that's popularly called the "pineapple express," a term that refers to the tracks' origins in Hawaii. One such system came ashore near San Francisco on January 6,2013, bringing with it cloud coverage over all but the southernmost portions of the state.
