FUEL MANAGEMENT ACCIDENTS have not yet been analyzed for the year 2014 to the present, but an early look indicates to AOPA Air Safety Institute analysts that the accident rate is not continuing to improve. There were 67 incidents classified "Flight Planning and Decision-Making; Fuel Management" in 2013, nine of them fatal. The trend was going in the right direction at the time. In 2012 fuel management accidents—running out of gas, mismanaging the fuel system, or fuel contamination—had decreased 18 percent over the previous year, according to ASI's Joseph T. Nall Report. In 2013 the number fell another 16 percent.
