That little grass airstrip on the plateau. You know you can safely land your airplane there. But can you get it out without a truck? You look to your airplane's owner's manual but it still leaves your question unanswered. The answer: It all depends on the conditions. Fortunately, you have a way to make your airplane more short-field friendly. You've found that there is a STOL kit available for your make and model by way of a STC. STOL is the conventional acronym for short takeoff and landing. Some airplanes are sold as STOL from the start. Some examples include the Quest Kodiak and the Maule M-9-235. STOL kits are available from several companies in the U.S., such as Horton or Crosswinds. Aircraft that can be modified by kit include the PA-12, PA-18, various Citabrias, the Cessna 180, and more.
