Hartford, Connecticut, is the state's capital and its nineteenth-century architecture, riverfront plaza, and fine restaurants earn it the moniker "New England's Rising Star." Samuel Langhorne Clemens-Mark Twain-lived here after he earned fame and celebrity with the publication of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In Hartford Twain wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and The Prince and the Pauper. Next door to the Clemens family lived Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. Both homes are open for tours; the Mark Twain House has a remarkable visitor's center and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center offers a glimpse of life in the late nineteenth century.
