These and a host of related questions are the components of a process called life cycle assessment (LCA). As interest in sustainability continues to grow, more and more businesses are conducting LCAs, analyzing everything from wind turbines to bottles of beer. An LCA is an analysis of a product or process that takes into account every stage in its existence and measures the effect of everything that goes into making, distributing, and recycling the item. While LCAs typically focus on environmental effects such as greenhouse gas emissions, aquatic toxicity, air pollution, and water quality, some examine social or economic influences, as well.
