Traditional manufacturing, making large numbers of identical units, is giving way to mass customization, making customized versions of products to fit the needs of specific customers. The challenge is to provide customized products better and more cheaply than does traditional manufacturing, while creating a manufacturing process so agile it can literally turn on a dime to meet customers' rapidly changing needs.
