The November column, which dealt with deciding manufacturing lot sizes on the basis of an A, B, C classification system or using various ratios involving set-up time, concluded that A, B, C-based rationale for lot sizing has a useful basis. We did not agree, however, that maximizing inventory turnover is a sound objective. Also, capping of production does have established, practical reasons, but we haven't seen one based on the ratio of run time to total time or run time to setup time. Readers were invited to comment on the subject. Erik Wikstrom replied with a thoughtful discussion of these topics.
