Materials and operations professionals have learned to work cooperatively with design engineers, quality engineers, systems people, manufacturing personnel, and accountants. Now they must work closely with another group—sales and marketing organizations. The relationship between materials/operations and sales/ marketing professionals has become more critical as new tools, such as sales force automation (SFA) and customer relationship management (CRM), are introduced. Designed to integrate with the new generation of ERP packages, these tools feed data warehouse and business intelligence tools. When these tools are integrated correctly, the organization has new ammunition to win and keep customers. And materials and operations groups obtain better information on customer needs, enabling improved planning in both product design and production.
