Secondary sludge, the waste biomass resulting from aerobic biological treatment of pulp mill effluent, can often pose a major disposal challenge for the mill. Depending on the aerobic process used this can be as high as 100 kg of air-dried sludge per tonne of kraft pulp produced. Landfilling and incineration are the most common disposal methods, but requires preliminary dewatering to reduce volume.
