摘要

The construction sector presents a history of problems related to the quality of its products, services and processes. Many research works and initiatives focusing on such problems have been conducted by researchers, professionals and organizations from the wide field covered by this sector. Part of the solutions to these problems points to the need for improvement in the management mechanisms of the design process and the integration between design and construction activities. In this context, the present article analyses the design process of bridges and viaducts. The method of casernstudy was used to focus on a large-sized viaduct project in which some principles of concurrent engineering are introduced in order to improve the quality of both the product and the construction process. The case study illustrates that better integration between design and production, with effective participation by the contractor using concurrent engineering concepts, has allowed constructive rationalization and decreased construction costs.
