摘要

This year marks the centenary of the birth of the architect Ralph Erskine (1914-2005). Erskine was born and educated in London, moving to Sweden in 1939 from where he subsequently made an international reputation for characterful environmental architecture in the social democratic tradition of that country. Involved with the Team X group - to whom in 1958 he presented his project for an arctic town, famously surrounded by a climatically-defensive inhabited wall - he produced memorably delightful housing projects and University buildings, later also re-imagining office space along more egalitarian lines with his headquarters for Skanska in Stockholm, 'Lilla Bommen' (1989), and 'The Ark' in Hammersmith, London (1990). A symposium to mark Erskine's centenary was held at Chalmers University in Sweden in February and some of the papers published in this issue of arq were first presented there.
