Recently, aTuesday Night Talk was held to discuss the current and future position of the RAIA within the architectural profession. Both the issues raised and the response to the event itself, highlighted some of the personal observations I have made during my 10-year association with the institute and my lifelong association with architects (my father is an architect).rnThere is not serious engagement by the membership with their organisation. The pathetic attendance at the recent talk exemplified this member apathy and disengagement with their organisation. While there is never a shortage of member opinion and even complaint, it is often ill-informed and limited to self-focused whinging about what is not being done for them. Seldom does opinion extend to becoming informed and involved in making any significant difference. Involvement, contributions and vital decisions on direction and policy are left up to an increasingly overburdened few.
