Joint expeditionary and multinational missions worldwide have developed a need for maritime forces that are versatile, flexible and mobile, capable of operating in conflicts, security enforcement and humanitarian relief operations, and able to sustain operations for extended periods. Translating these missions into equipment capability require both first-rank and less-sophisticated naval forces. Multipurpose amphibious ship are required to match available budgets, the multiple attributes of a multi-spot aviation capability, protected load/offload and accommodation for watercraft, extended C3 capabilities, organic medical/primary care facilities, and a large internal volume for personnel, vehicles and other materiel transportation.
