The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps at Sahl-Sinjar (referred to as Sinjar) may well be one of the unsung success stories of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Set up to prevent weapons from entering Iraq from Syria, the mission was originally intended to be one of short duration. Because of their initial success in blocking access from the Sinjar Mountains, their long patrol range, and their rapid strike capabilities, the Marines' mission was quickly extended from 90 days to "to be determined."
