Ten years ago, developing an application for a phone took a lot of expertise: both hardware and software. Companies like Emerson, Motorola, and Nokia had teams of talented engineers and programmers working on phone designs. From these groups sprouted a variety of phones with the standard set of applications found in the early 2000s: phone, address book, text messaging, maybe a game or two. Then iPhone with its iOS happened, and Android shortly thereafter.
