Virtual set technology recently evolved from the traditional blue-box chroma-key technique and has already had an major impact on the broadcast industry. The possibility to combine, in real time, actors with realistic computer generated sets having no physical constraints has significant consequences in both economics and creative design. This paper reviews the technology involved in virtual sets, covering the studio equipment, essential software issues and the production process. It also defines the requirements for making virtual sets a more complete and reliable production tool. Some of the information contained in this paper will be quickly outdated by the pace of development of the underlying technologies. However our information goal will stay valid and we hope to reach 2 kinds of readers: 1. the novices: to help demystify the technology; 2. the users who are already familiar with virtual sets.
