With a local market share of 54.7%, Shenzhen Pepsi Beverages Limited was considered a role model in the Chinese beverage market; it had increased its sales by 24.4% annually from 1996 to 2001. In April 2002, Pepsi Inc. held a grand celebration in Shenzhen for its 20th anniversary in China. Peter Thompson, the CEO of Pepsi Beverages International was present at the ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Chu Wahhui, the president of Pepsi Investment (China) Limited (Pepsi China) said: The great success of Shenzhen Pepsi should be attributed to the vision and trust of its investors... Both sides have scrupulously abided by the business principles and agreements. However, the situation in Sichuan Pepsi Beverages Limited was the extreme opposite. Pepsi China was being trapped in a painful marriage with its local partner in Sichuan.
