With conflicting claims at sea, smuggling, terrorism and piracy, the need for aerial maritime patrol and surveillance capabilities continues to be an integral part of air operations undertaken by most air, naval, and maritime forces in the region with a variety of platforms being used. This is not to say that the submarine- or warship-hunting capabilities that were honed during the Cold War are a thing of the past, because such incidents are still occurring in the region recently in the South China Sea. Some companies are predicting a steady trend of fixed-wing maritime aircraft opportunities in line with the continued proliferation of submarines in the region. This is particularly true across the Asia-Pacific region where more than 100 submarines are predicted to be operating by the year 2020. For the smaller nations, in as much as wanting to acquire new and advanced platforms, the ever constraints on budgets have meant that many seek to achieve an optimal balance between cost- effectiveness and performance capability in providing the element of surveillance over the maritime domain. In a more and more demanding tactical environment, maritime patrol/ surveillance aircraft have become multipurpose platforms.
