The great tank battles of World War II were the first example of modern mechanised warfare―they taught future army chiefs the importance of developing highly mobile armoured infantry fighting vehicles (AIFVs) to support the main armoured formations in delivering the decisive blow to the enemy. The Vietnam War saw AIFVs coming into service in large numbers for the first time ever. On both sides of the Atlantic during the peak of the Cold War period, the Soviet Mo-torised Rifle Regiments and the US Mechanised Infantry Battalions deployed huge numbers of AIFVs.
