The ATM. Can you imagine the financial services industry without it? It has delivered on the promise made in the 1970s, providing consumers with the convenience of 24/7 service and creating a more cost-effective transaction for financial institutions. Changes in consumer behavior, regulation, legislation and technology are forcing the industry to take another look at the self-service channel and its role in the overall retail delivery strategy. Today, transaction volumes are flat at best, and the trend indicates they are likely to decline in the coming years. Those who view the ATM solely as a revenue stream will face a real challenge. A new, innovative view of the self-service channel, as well as a shift in the way we measure its success, will be vital for financial institutions that want to thrive in this changing environment.
