Taipei-Investors who have been look-ing around for the next big thing in technology may have found it right in front of their eyes. Almost all of the screens for those nifty new flat panel displays cropping up on the desks of everyone from stock traders to high school students are made in Asia. The screens, made by Samsung Electronics of South Korea, Korean-Dutch joint venture LG.Philips LCD, and AU Optronics, Chung-hwa Picture Tube and Hannstar Display of Taiwan, are called thin-film transistor liquid crystal displays, or TFT LCDs. Smaller versions also are used in laptop computers and cellular phones. Less than a year ago, reeling from the global implosion in tech demand and with their operations deep in the red, many of these same companies were considered some of the ugliest options around. Now, they offer some of the clearest evidence of a nascent tech rebound.
