摘要

It's a measure of how closed Japan has been in the past that the world's second-largest economy was the last place chosen by Carlyle Group, one of the world's largest private-equity firms, to scour for investments. At the end of February, Carlyle closed its first deal in Japan, in a transaction that reflects how the financial distress of many Japanese companies is creating opportunities for foreign firms to make interesting acquisitions. Carlyle paid $77 million for a 95% stake in what was formerly a subsidiary of Daiei Group, the tottering retailer that is downsizing in a desperate effort to remain alive. The company, A.S.S., provides electronic-security and cash-management outsourcing services.
