摘要

El Nino, the weather condition that brought devastating fires and droughts to much of Southeast Asia in 1997 and 1998, may be back. What it means for investors depends on where in the market they place their bets. While international investors may not have exposure to agricultural companies directly affected by El Nino, there could be a negative effect on publicly traded companies that depend on domestic demand in Asia. Strength in Southeast Asia's farming sector supported the region's economies during the recent economic slowdown, helping companies including San Miguel in the Philippines and Big C Supercenter in Thailand, enjoy strong sales growth. El Nino could weaken that benevolent cycle. "El Nino is a threat to these domestic economies that we will have to increasingly consider," says Pradumna Rana, economist at the Asian Development Bank in Manila. Yet adversity can also bring opportunity: El Nino may present a chance for savvy investors to profit as it pushes up the price of certain traded commodities, especially coffee and palm oil.
