Hyundai Motor Co, has chosen Alabama as home for its first U.S. automotive plant, where the resurgent South Korean auto maker plans to build as many as 300,000 vehicles a year starting around 2005. The $1 billion plant, expected to be near Montgomery, Ala., caps a remarkable comeback in the U.S. for Hyundai. Years of quality and reliability problems nearly pushed Hyundai out of the U.S. market in the 1990s. But the auto maker launched a series of low-priced new models starting in the late 1990s, backed by warranties of as many as 10 years, and has seen double-digit sales gains every year since. Originally a small-car maker, Hyundai has added a sport utility vehicle and larger and sportier cars to its lineup, winning over consumers with fully loaded vehicles at prices that compete with rivals' base models.
