You might not know it looking at the hypercaffeinated crowds in Tokyo's Otema-chi financial district, but Japan's espresso boom is coming off the boil. That could mean recently piping-hot U.S.-name coffee shops are set to run out of steam, while the stale image of home-brewed Doutor Coffee Co. could freshen up. Starbucks Coffee Japan Ltd. and Tully's Coffee Japan Co. have enjoyed explosive growth since they brought their Seattle cachet here in the late 1990s. Japan has long been home to pricey coffee shops, but the American newcomers opened urban Japanese coffee drinkers' eyes to quick, high-quality brew. But Starbucks and Tully's have nearly saturated the trendy metro Tokyo areas where they prosper, limiting their growth prospects, analysts say.
