Hong Kong―Developers from Hong Kong are moving into China to weather a drought in their local property market, but New World China Land Ltd. stands to benefit the most as it already has a strong presence there. NWCL was Hong Kong's first mover into China's real-estate market. Over the past 10 years, it has accumulated a land reserve in China almost one-quarter the size of Hong Kong Island. However, questions remain about its management's ability to make a solid profit from the vast property ownership. NWCL's stock was trading midweek last week at HK$2.25 (29 U.S. cents), 46% below its 52-week high of HK$4.13 on May 31,2001, when investors were looking desperately for China plays most likely to benefit from the country's entry to the World Trade Organization.
