UTStarcom Inc., a wireless telecommunications-equipment maker, reported an 87% jump in first-quarter earnings, defying an overall cooling trend in its main market, China. Sales for the three months ended March 31 rose 54% to $183.7 million, compared with $119.2 million in the year-earlier period. Diluted per-share earnings were 15 cents on net profit of $17.5 million, up from $9.4 million a year earlier. Eight analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call had forecast per-share earnings of 15 cents during the quarter.
