Climate change is a crucial problem to be addressed as a welfare issue, given that EU Directive 2009/72/CE imposes environmental and energy targets on European Countries. In Italy, in line with the European Union Directive 2001/77/EC on renewable energy sources (RES), the Government's aim is to achieve 17 % of total energy resources by the year 2020. The annual costs necessary to reach this aim is estimated at 3.5 billion € per year. The effectiveness of RES development cost and the economic sustainability of these targets has been debated. In this respect, it has become crucial to explore Italian consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) for renewable energy in electricity production.
