摘要

In 1991, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission established the Global Ocean Observing System in response to the desire of many nations to improve the global management of the oceans, with a subsidiary aim of improving climate forecasts. In 2007 the Australian government initiated the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) as its contribution to the global network. Commercial fisheries could gain considerable benefits from the data streams provided by IMOS facilities, including: • Improved fishery management and harvest decisions, through better fishing related data streams such as ocean temperature; salinity; dissolved oxygen; meteorology; optical properties; turbidity; and chlorophyll. • Improved fishing efficiency and safety, through more accurate weather and ocean conditions.
