A performance-based approach to car park ventilation design

In recent years, with the provision of 'deemed to satisfy' conditions introduced into the Building Code of Australia, the performance-based approach has been widely used in building design. Previously, designers had to follow the prescriptive methods set down in national or international standards, which may inhibit the use of innovative design approaches. Carparks in large shopping centres are often multi-level and they require large volumes of fresh air to dilute the pollutants emitted by car engines. There are many factors such as ambient carbon monoxide (CO) concentration, average vehicle engine CO emission rate, de-park time, exit time, and wall or roof openings, that may influence the ventilation requirement. This paper lists these factors and discusses their implications on carpark ventilation design. A time-based dilution model for fully enclosed carparks, and a natural ventilation model for hybrid ventilation of partially open carparks are described. The design method has been applied to a number of shopping centre carparks in Sydney. Preliminary on-site CO measurements have shown that the performance-based design methodology is suitable for estimating the ventilation requirements of large shopping centre carparks.
