Substances which contain chlorine have been extensively used as working fluids in vapour compression cycles for refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps. Unfortunately, these affect the atmosphere when they are released, causing ozone depletion and global warming. The alternatives are synthetic fluids without chlorine and natural fluids in vapour compression or gas compression cycles. Air is the most important working fluid in gas compression cycles for refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems. Different air cycles are described and compared on the basis of theoretical investigations. Improvements in energy efficiency are discussed and coefficients of performance are compared for different systems. An experimental air-cycle system, developed by the authors, is also considered.
