This paper looks at some of the important factors that should be considered in selection of steam generating plant to provide a reliable and efficient energy source. Steam for motive power and heating has been in industrial use for over two hundred years. Many people now consider the steam boiler to have been replaced by more advanced means of providing rotary motion and heating. It is true that the demise of the steam engine brought to an end a significant use for the steam boiler and a visible application of steam in industry. Commercial and industrial uses of steam for process heating and chemical reactions have been hard to replace, and currently provide the mainstay for steam boilers.
