European settlement in Australia is relatively recent, beginning just over 212 years ago. The idea that there might be any differences in any aspect of life from that occurring in their European places of origin is one that European-Australians have not until recently dared to contemplate. The consequence of this colonial heritage is that Australians still tend to take guidance from today's successors to their northern hemisphere forebears and to regulate construction in such a way as to over emphasises the need to cope with cold winters.
