At the December meeting of the South Australian Division, committee member, Mr Peter Bilstein spoke to us on the use of secondary refrigerants in the industry. As Peter explained, in many applications heat is transferred not to the primary refrigerant as used in the vapour compression cycle but to a secondary coolant which may be any liquid cooled by the refrigerant used for the transmission of heat without a change in its state. These secondary coolants are also known as heat transfer brines or secondary refrigerants. Peter then described the physical properties of secondary coolants and the corrosion protection needed.
