New trends in residential cooling - energy saving with evaporative cooling

This paper briefly discusses the issues affecting the spread of evaporative cooling. Energy saving estimates by Pescod made in (1976) and Williamson and Coldicutt (1986 and 1988) are updated to reflect current product efficiencies and control methods. The claim by evaporative cooler manufacturers of energy use savings of up to 80 per cent is shown to be correct. Maintenance requirements are discussed and recommendations are presented. One of the most common reasons for customer dissatisfaction is poor duct design. Duct design principles to ensure good air distribution are presented. The paper follows with brief comments on how to design a house to minimise overall heating and cooling energy consumption, when the cooling is provided by evaporative cooling. Future opportunities for evaporative cooling are discussed. A number of potential research topics are suggested.
