Displacement uses the basic principle that warmer air rises to achieve a partly piston-like flow pattern in a room. In many situations, it has been proved to be more efficient than mixing ventilation for simultaneously removing excess heat and achieving good air quality. Its basic thermal and flow characteristics are very different from that of mixing ventilation. Simple engineering models are summarised for predicting near-field length, airspeed in the far-field, air tem- perature in the occupied regions, the vertical air temperature gradi- ent, concentration in the polluted region, the clean zone height and the cooling loads.
