The development of replacements for CFC refrigerants has understandably concentrated on chemically similar compounds which might be used as direct substitutes but there is a danger that this approach may overlook potentially viable alternatives. This paper highlights the environmental problems of CFCs and considers possible substitutes and alternatives. The hydrocarbon propane (R290) is identified as having considerable potential and a propane/isobutane (R290/R600a) mixture is described which has saturation properties virtually identical to those of R12.
