If quality is job one, as as ford motor once proclaimed, then reputation is certainly Job Two. There's no doubt that vehicles have greatl improved industry-wide, with fewer initial glitches and better long-term reliability, but the time lag between improvement and public perception has hurt some automakers. "The quality is definitely there, but the public doesn't know about it yet," says Jim Giddings, general manager, Lustine Toyota/Dodge/Scion, Woodbridge, Va., of the domestics. "I don't think the majority of people pay attention to [quality ratings], and mat hurts manufacturers like Chrysler."
