If this struggling economy has taught us anything, it's that we work in a cyclical industry. Nothing brings that into sharper focus than trying to analyze whether or not we have a shortage of qualified technicians and, if so, what we should do about it.rnThe consensus at the beginning of this decade was that, yes, there is a shortage of qualified technicians and the root of the problem was poor pay. Examples of individuals leaving the industry to make 30 percent more fixing computers were everywhere. In the United States, we blamed the Department of Labor's lack of a specific occupational classification for the low respect we received. During informal polls of technicians attending my presentations, I always asked, "How many of you would recommend this profession to your children or other young people considering a career path?" Hardly a hand went up.
