The procedure for regulating recreational Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) in the US came into effect on December 21. The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAAs) help desk was staffed throughout Christmas Day to cope with enquiries and applications relating to newly acquired presents. The new regulations have avoided the US civil aircraft register being swamped with model aircraft. Federal law requires a $5 fee that will be collected at the time of registration via credit card. To encourage speedy compliance, the FAA made the process free for the first 30 days.
