I haven't read the author's famous Vulcan 607, although I've been told about it so many times that I might as well have done. The upside of my literary inadequacy is that Into The Black is reviewed here on its own merits, not by comparison with its predecessor. It is exceptional. Written in a style somewhere between that of a thriller and an historical narrative, the book begins back in 1962 with a record-breaking Phantom flight by a test pilot who was later to fly the first Space Shuttle mission. It continues through the shuttle's long development to the conclusion of that first trip into space. There was considerable doubt over whether the shuttle would return from orbit without catastrophe after several of its heat-resistant tiles, vital to successful re-entry, were lost during launch and climb into orbit. White unfolds the drama from the viewpoints of the astronauts and engineers involved, many of whom he interviewed for the book.
