Major European airlines could be forced to reevaluate corporate strategies now that Lufthansa holds a minority stake in Fraport AG, the operator of Frankfurt's international air-port, and has confirmed plans to invest in German air traffic control provider Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) next year. In an unprecedented move, Lufthansa late last month acquired a 4.95% stake in Fraport AG and intends to increase the shareholding to at least 5% in the near future. Europe's second-largest airline paid 170 million euros ($202 million) in the transaction that came a day after the government announced it was selling its entire 18.2% stake in Fraport to ease pressure on the federal budget.
