The Russian government is merging its helicopter industrial base in an effort to streamline operations. A watch is on to see which programs will emerge from the industrial shakeout. This partial re-nationalization of the industry has been brought about by shareholders in defense enterprises looking for government involvement to ensure the future of their business. As in other segments of its aerospace industry, Russia is trying to end its long history of multiple, independent design and manufacturing houses. In the helicopter arena that process is nearing completion, with firms being subsumed under the Oboronprom Corp. holding company. The lone holdout, the privately held Rostov-based Rosrvertol manufacturing plant, is expected to be integrated as well.
